Reflexology Treatments
Reflexology is a complementary, holistic therapy which dates back to ancient Egypt and China. Reflexology works on the premise that there are reflex points on the feet and hands which correspond to all of the different parts of the body, including organs and glands. Through skilful manipulation, a reflexologist can stimulate the body’s own healing system which can help rebalance the entire body.
Reflexology is effective in treating:
-
Stress related conditions such as anxiety, hypertension, indigestion, constipation, IBS, headaches or migraines and insomnia.
-
Painful conditions such as arthritis, back pain and sciatica.
-
Hormonal imbalances, PMS, irregular or painful menstruation cycles and menopause.
-
Fertility issues
-
Symptoms associated with pregnancy
-
Aiding post-operative recovery & sports injuries
Typical Reflexology Treatments
The first reflexology treatment takes 1 hour and can be separated into two parts. The first part involves taking a full medical and lifestyle history from the client. This helps to identify any medical conditions which may be contraindicative to reflexology i.e. any conditions which would be made worse such as an infectious disease. It may also be necessary to obtain GP permission before treating a patient with certain conditions, for example, cancer.
After this, the second part of the treatment is the investigatory part where the reflexologist will work over all the reflex points on both feet. This enables the reflexologist to identify any reflex points which are out of balance.
A note is made of these and will help the reflexologist to create a treatment plan.
An out of balance reflex may be felt by the client in several ways.
They may be uncomfortable when touched or numb.
Reflexology is not intended to be painful and the reflexologist will adjust their pressure so that you are not uncomfortable. Some clients worry that their feet are too ticklish to be touched but it is very rare that this happens and most clients get used to the feeling and are able to relax and enjoy the treatment.
The majority of cases benefit from weekly treatments to start off with, as this ensures continuity and a chance for improvements.
Reflexology is a renewal and maintenance programme for the body. It not only aids recovery but helps the body to maintain health. It is not necessary to have a symptom to benefit from reflexology.
In a busy and unrelenting stressful world, the positive effects of giving ourselves the time out required to receive a treatment should not be underestimated.
Reflexology does not claim to diagnose or cure medical conditions, it can, however, facilitate the body’s own healing processes which may bring relief from symptoms of many conditions.
