Menopause & Hormonal Health

Woman

Perimenopause and menopause can bring significant changes, both physically and emotionally. Every woman's experience is different. For some, the transition is relatively straightforward, while for others symptoms can have a real impact on everyday life.

Changes may begin during perimenopause, often several years before periods stop completely, and can include changes to the menstrual cycle, hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbance, mood changes, anxiety, changes in energy, headaches, digestive changes, brain fog, changes in weight and body composition, and vaginal or urinary symptoms.

I don't see menopause as a disease, but as another stage in a woman's life. My approach is to look at what is happening for you individually and consider how herbal medicine, nutrition, lifestyle and reflexology can be used to support you through this transition.

An Individual Approach

There is no single menopause plan that will suit every woman.

During a consultation, I take time to look at your symptoms and health history, but also at the wider picture. This includes your menstrual history, digestion and bowel health, nutrition, sleep, stress, energy, movement and lifestyle.

We can then identify the areas that may need the most support and put together a realistic plan based on you rather than simply treating menopause as a list of symptoms.

Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine can play an important role in my approach to perimenopause and menopause.

Rather than using the same menopause herbs for every woman, herbs are selected according to the individual. Two women experiencing hot flushes, for example, may have very different health histories, sleep patterns, stress levels, digestion and other symptoms, so their herbal prescriptions may also be very different.

Where appropriate, I prepare an individual herbal prescription based on your needs and review this as things change.

Herbal medicine is considered alongside any medication, supplements or medical treatment you are already using.

Nutrition

Nutrition is an important foundation during perimenopause and menopause.

Rather than focusing on restrictive diets, I look at the quality of the overall diet and how well it is supporting you at this stage of life.

We may look at areas such as whole plant foods, fibre, protein, healthy fats and the nutrients needed to support general health as we age. Digestion and bowel health are also important considerations, as is maintaining a way of eating that is realistic and sustainable.

Small, consistent changes can often be much more useful than trying to completely overhaul your diet.

Reflexology for Menopause

Reflexology is another important part of the support I offer women during perimenopause and menopause.

Treatments work the whole body while also giving particular attention to reflexes associated with the endocrine and nervous systems and other areas relevant to the individual woman.

Reflexology can be particularly valuable during times of hormonal change when sleep, stress, mood and energy may all be affected. Each treatment is adapted according to what is happening for you at that time rather than following the same routine for every woman.

Regular treatments can also provide valuable time to slow down and reconnect with yourself during what can be a very busy stage of life.

Sleep, Stress & Lifestyle

Sleep and stress can have a significant influence on how we feel during perimenopause and menopause.

If sleep has become disrupted, stress levels are high or there is very little time for rest and recovery, these are important parts of the overall picture rather than something separate from hormonal health.

Movement, time outdoors, relaxation, good sleep habits and finding realistic ways of managing stress can all form part of your individual plan.

The aim isn't perfection. It is to establish foundations that can be maintained and that support your health well beyond menopause.

Looking Beyond Menopause

This stage of life is also an opportunity to look at longer-term health.

As we move through menopause, supporting cardiovascular health, bone health, muscle strength, metabolic health and overall wellbeing becomes increasingly important.

Nutrition, movement, sleep, stress management and other lifestyle factors all have a role to play, and these can be considered as part of your individual plan rather than focusing only on managing current symptoms.

Working Alongside Medical Care

Herbal medicine, nutrition and reflexology can be used alongside conventional healthcare, but they do not replace appropriate medical assessment or treatment.

New, persistent or unusual symptoms should always be properly investigated. If you are taking medication or using HRT, this will be taken into account when considering herbal medicines and other recommendations.

Reflexology does not claim to diagnose or cure medical conditions, it can, however, facilitate the body’s own healing processes which may bring relief from symptoms of many conditions.
